When God laugh…
Man believes he had power over all.
Can control the sun, the river and the wind.
I like the trickery of the Gods.
Allow men to stand and shout how powerful and strong he is.
I believe the Gods are laughing.
Poor foolish man control nothing.
We are blinded by our greed and hate.
Old wisdom need to be held true.
We must pray and seek peace with the Gods.
The Gods do not lose.
Just observers of man’s mishaps and steady fall to foolishness.

I don’t share your views on god, John, but I do love the power and sincerity of your writing.

A closeness with God comes with the only true form of “gambling”: love. Life, however? We become what this poem retorts upon, when we gamble lives away from some ridiculous quest for power and external control.
What I am continuing to learn, for myself, is that the only true form of control is with oneself. Control yourself. Restrain yourself from an overextension into ambition. Darkness only becomes evil when we have no vision, while within it. In other words, we become consumed when we are willing to forgo our sanity for the competitions that life’s greed and corruption has as its enablers and manipulators.
Still, we, as humans, must take risks. Without that, we cling to believe we are worth nothing, when a truth must be realized that we have nothing to lose. Even then, our boldness to gain everything must be restrained, to a degree.
With the love that goes beyond all flesh and beating hearts, this identifies as a gamble of oneself into another. A head-first dive, so to speak, into another person’s heart. With that kind of “gamble”, we are always losing. But for good reason. “Falling” or “diving” into love begins with everything we wanted, though ends up with nothing we ever expected. To that end, we lose the meaning of preference, as we are humbled to bend low to those places we did not explore, before we learned to love.
God, I believe, is a being of love. Believing in God or in love comes with the price of a faith that ends up sacrificing all we expected to be real, in favor of all we must believe in for it to exist or hold meaning.

I think God laughs at man’s antics too. Always thinking themselves superior. There will always come a time of reckoning. A very telling poem.

I’m not terribly familiar with London’s works, though of course, I know of him. I like how you took his phrase and went with it. If there are gods, they are probably laughing at our folly.

I found the book “When Gods laugh” in 2012. Short stories. The book is worth reading. His thoughts are meaningful in our world today.

Wow, talk about inspired! I remember one summer I wrote a lot of poems like that… but I had a goal in mind to get a book of poems out, and I did! But it took a lot of writing. Then, truths string from the very lighting of the time fuse. God said to Job, “Where were you when . . . ”
Count the countless recounts of that same theme throughout literature. It will number as the stars.
Only those who are self-assured in whatever self-based faith they employ to keep them safe will argue otherwise.
Holy, holy, holy recounted Isaiah of his dream.
Many have gone boldly in the Creator’s name and then appear to want to usurp the crown and throne.
Like Father Cavanaugh in the film “Rudy” said:
“Son, in 35 years of religious study, I have only come up with two hard incontrovertible facts: there is a God, and I’m not Him.”

The book had 8 stories in the book. Was written in 1911. His book had great wisdom in it. I wrote 40 new poems because of the book. If you need reasons to write. Jack London’s book “When Gods laugh” is a must.

Oh wow, it sounds great! I don’t usually use that kind of thing for inspiration but I might just read it for the book’s sake. I usually write things down whenever they come to my mind for blog posts and especially poetry. I rarely edit after I’ve written something, and never for poetry.

A very meaningful poem. You captured the essence of human nature, the fact that so many of us think that we control every thing, that we are the centre of the world, when in reality we don’t. I believe that somewhere there is a divine power that ‘laughs’ at us for our naivety and foolishness. I also like the fact that you mentioned how our lives are governed, in general, by negative emotions. It was a pleasure to read your poem! 🙂

I recently read an article where a Catholic Priest said of his own church that 78 percent of the member’s believed that it was okay to cohabited with premarital sex before marriage while the church and the bible both agree that it is wrong. It’s like we create “a god” only when convenient and when we need one, forgetting that if we really believe in him then he is the creator. If we truly believe he is a supernatural being of ultimate righteousness and power, shouldn’t he be the one setting the standards? I’m surprised to hear another frail human like myself recognizing it is so. Very nice poem.

I need to learn more about Africa literature. Hard for writers from Asia and Africa to sell books so far away. I would like some recommendations. Thank you for reading and the comment.

I have this book, John. It was my Dad’s and was published in 1911. It’s been awhile since I’ve read it. Looks like I’m due to pick it up again for another read.

It is a wonderful book. Each story teaches a different lesson. I like the first chapter and the “Just Meat” chapter the best. I got lucky. At a library book sale. I have a copy of the book for one dollar.

…jack london has fallen in the cracks…i read everything he wrote as a teener!…i used to carry all the wines from his sonoma vineyards!…just now i am re-reading kirkegaard, sartre & camus! maybe i will have to revisit him again soon! my next project to to re-read the shakespeare canon riverside cover to cover! problem is writing cuts into my reading! be strong brother! ❤ u!
