Susie G Scott

A clear and cloudless day, a picnic in a luxurious meadow of bright flowers. A tea-dress, a wicker basket, finger sandwiches, love.

The sea in England. Not quite stormy and wild, but not like the tranquil Mediterranean. A bit rough and cold. Uninviting. A solitary beach, stones instead of sand. Hurting feet with no shoes. Toes turning blue.

The trickle of blood from the stones. A smear that looks just like the jam in the finger sandwiches. The colour of the tea-dress, matching the lining of the wicker basket. A carry, princess-style, to the comfort of the car and a travel first-aid kit.
