A prison to keep us safe

Powerful poetry by a talented writer.

The white sands of a beach.
With clear blue skies.
A fine day for a picnic.
I could not get access.

Luxury homes along the coast.
Overlooking the blue ocean.
Their own secluded beach.
No entry, gated property.

Terrace houses in suburbs.
Almost all have guard posts.
To stop crime, defend our homes.
To protect ourselves, we tell.

When did fear take over?
Of locking ourselves in prisons.
Afraid of our own shadow.
A false sense of safety.

Public roads with guard posts.
No entry without permission.
Halt! Security checks.
A prison to keep us safe.
