Ain’t no fucking good war…
(Johnnie at Fort Ord, California. 1992.)
Ain’t no fucking good war.
A Poem by Coyote PoetryCan’t allow the hate and fear to overcome us. World been the same for a long time. Must dance and love. Never know when it is time to go.
Ain’t no fucking good war.
Old WW2 Vet sat alone. He raised his glass to the sky and he looked at an empty seat. “To the good war my friend.” He drank his shot of whiskey. “He whispered, ain’t no fucking good war. ” He put his face into his hands.
Father had his ribbons and awards over the fireplace from the Korea war. We watched war movies together. He was the hero who always saved me. On the weekend he would drink his rum. Late at night I would sit with him and he would talk to dead buddies left in the Korean dirt. He would tell me. “No war is worth a shit.”
Old Vietnam Vet was dying. The agent orange had made him 110 pounds and the VA won’t see him anymore. The VA doctors told him nothing they can do for him. I sat with him and listen. He told me he volunteers and was proud. He thought he was doing the right thing. He looked me in the eyes and whispered “All my friends are dead. I will see them soon. War is fuck-up my friend. “What will I tell them? Did the War have any reason?
Was it just a fucking grave filled with hate?”
I tried to put myself in the places where living another day is your goal. Being hungry and needing medical are your daily needs. Watching their world fall apart around them. I go to graves of good friends. They died in Iraq for the hatred of the Bush’s years. I whispered “Fuck you war.”

I agree and this is wrong dear Cassa. Rich men get richer and the poor man fight the wars.

I was stationed there that same year and was one of the last ones to leave when the base closed down.

We could of knew each other. I closed down my unit and I assisted in closing down other unit one also. I was one of the last. I was a Supply Sgt. I loved Monterey. I read poetry at the Monterey book store and in Pacific Grove weekly. from 1991-1993. I re-visit Monterey in May 2018. Everything gone. No more book stores, no music bars in the city and less artist on the pier. Sad. Thank you for reading and the comment.

We could have known each other because I was there closing down several units too. I was an intel analyst assigned to the aviation brigade, and once headquarters closed, I did odd jobs for other units until I finally got sent to Ft. Knox. I recently saw pictures of the base and as far as I can tell, they’ve destroyed most of the old buildings. Very sad to see it all gone. Lots of good memories there.

Monterey was wonderful. Only a sign left now for Fort Ord. I had the best days of my life when I was station at Fort Ord.

Last time I was there, the hospital was still there and some of the barracks. The hospital looked like they had turned it into a secure office building.
