you’ve only just returned do you concede child
o genteel N’êng village hair bathing
wisps of hairy moss and locks of dusk
hair sombre like the flesh
the water bay long gone as the forest is gone
gone like the day father and mother met
in the tears of H’linh
father and mother picking the fronds of virtue
the virtue in a glance
a cover for each other to then be chased out of the forest
so too the kisses in their eyes

eyes closing in dreams of a song
will you, child, exchange a herd of oxen to marry me?
allow my oxen plough to scatter your matriarch
pulling the fate of all that bitter ploughing lineage
muffling dreams into the skirts of our wives
a man’s drop of blood inside the heart of his wife
